A mini-grid operator is buying several kinds of work: programme reporting, customer metering, equipment visibility, dispatch and maintenance coordination. One product may cover several of them, but a shortlist built around the word “monitoring” can miss the distinctions that matter.
This is a non-exhaustive guide based on public material reviewed in August 2026. It compares documented claims, not tested performance. Gen318 is included as the publisher's own product, with its pilot status and targets stated separately.
Start by identifying the obligation your current tools leave unresolved. Then use the source links and questions below to test a supplier's fit for your sites.
Five jobs to map before choosing software

These are overlapping roles, not exclusive categories. Metering data can inform operations; a programme platform can also monitor equipment. The contractual scope and installed configuration matter more than the label.
The comparison
Vendor claim means the linked public material describes the capability. Assessment means our interpretation of that material. Not established means this review did not establish it; it is not evidence that the product lacks it. Gen318 entries are publisher-reported, not independently verified.

Use this table to prepare questions, not to award scores. A product with a narrower remit can be the correct choice for the job it is contracted to do.
Programme workflows and equipment monitoring: Odyssey
Odyssey describes its role as the digital backbone for DARES. For a participating developer, the current award and programme instructions determine the submission and verification process. A separate operations platform should feed that process, not imply it replaces Odyssey.
Odyssey also acquired Ferntech. Its FernFlex page describes local control, multi-manufacturer compatibility and data storage. The Mozambique case study demonstrates why it would be wrong to classify Odyssey solely as a finance portal.
Separate the questions: which programme obligations does Odyssey administer, and which operational functions are available under the proposed equipment and service contract? Named case studies do not establish the total installed fleet, and financing-platform totals should not be reused as monitoring deployment counts.
Metering and revenue: SparkMeter and SteamaCo
SparkMeter's site describes metering, billing, payments and grid-management functions. Its ownership notice is relevant to a buyer checking current support and continuity. The older Koios description is preserved in an archived January 2025 page; confirm current scope with the supplier rather than treating an archive as a live commitment.
SteamaCo's off-grid platform and EEP case study are directly relevant to Nigerian buyers. Its Aurora AI describes revenue-protection detection. That does not, by itself, establish a generation-asset failure forecast or diesel-dispatch function.
Both can be valuable operational partners. The important distinction is between customer and meter operations, equipment condition and generation control. Ask where data crosses those boundaries and who owns each response.
Equipment portals: VRM, Growatt and FusionSolar
Victron VRM, Growatt's monitoring platform and Huawei FusionSolar offer equipment visibility. They should not be dismissed merely because they are manufacturer-associated.
Victron documents supported non-Victron integrations. Cross-brand visibility can therefore exist within a vendor ecosystem, subject to the gateway and equipment configuration.
For a mixed fleet, request a model-level signal list and data-export terms. Confirm which readings are direct, calculated or unavailable. Then check whether one view can support the fleet's maintenance and reporting process. Avoid assuming either universal brand lock-in or universal compatibility.
Orchestration and portfolio operations
PowerLabs: the August review drew on published coverage, including TechCabal's account of Pai Enterprise. This is secondary reporting, not hands-on validation. It describes an orchestration proposition aimed at commercial and industrial users. A rural mini-grid buyer should ask for a relevant reference and confirm the reporting scope directly.
AMMP: its product, pricing and integrations pages describe a portfolio operating product. The August review found monitoring, ticketing, analytics and reporting, as well as predictive-maintenance claims and a SmartHelio integration. The absence of a separately priced predictive module does not establish absence of the capability. Ask how it is delivered and evaluated, and what Nigerian evidence workflows are supported.
These products illustrate why a feature checklist is only a starting point. A buyer needs to know what is available now, what requires another service and what remains in development.
Internal systems and other microgrid platforms
Husk Power publicly describes automation within its own operating fleet. That is relevant evidence against the claim that intelligent distributed-energy operation is absent in Africa. This review did not establish an independently licensed product available to other developers.
New Sun Road's Stellar Microgrid OS describes multi-vendor monitoring and optimisation. For an offline requirement, ask separately about buffering, local decisions and recovery. A statement that data is retained during a network outage does not establish every aspect of autonomous operation, nor does it prove that local decisions are absent.
Where Gen318 sits
Gen318 is built by Arnen Labs in Abuja to connect equipment telemetry, operator decisions, field work and reporting. It complements programme and metering platforms. It does not replace their ownership of grant administration, customer billing or payment records.

The August review did not establish one publicly documented product covering every element of the Nigerian offline, field-response and evidence workflow examined. That is a limit of this review, not proof of an empty market. Gen318 still needs to demonstrate the complete workflow and its outcomes under operating conditions.
How to use the guide in procurement
Take a recent fault and a recent reporting task to the supplier. Ask them to demonstrate the handoffs: equipment to alarm, alarm to work order, work order to verified repair, and source records to a report. Disconnect the network during the relevant part of the demonstration.
Ask for references with similar equipment and operating conditions. Compare total delivery cost, data access, support and exit arrangements. A feature claim matters only if it covers the job your team needs to complete.
Scope and corrections
The original review examined linked public pages in August 2026. It did not test products, inspect private contracts or exhaust every vendor. Schneider EcoStruxure Microgrid Advisor, Hitachi e-mesh, ABB, Siemens, ETAP uGrid, Ageto, DEIF and ComAp were not evaluated. Neither were private operator systems beyond the public descriptions cited. These omissions can change a procurement decision.
The first draft understated SteamaCo, AMMP and Odyssey; the 15 August update narrowed the claimed gap. On 4 September 2026, this guide replaced the “every vendor” title, removed universal absence claims and gave Gen318 explicit evidence-status labels. Homepage positioning remains an incomplete basis for a shortlist, but it does not make every shortlist wrong.
